- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 4 egg yolks and 0.5 cups of sugar until thick and pale, about 5 minutes. Fold in 1 cup of mascarpone cheese until just combined.
- In another bowl, whip 1 cup of heavy whipping cream until soft peaks form, about 3-4 minutes. Fold gently into the mascarpone mixture.
- In a shallow dish, mix 1 cup of hot espresso with 2 tablespoons of coffee liqueur if desired. Let cool for about 5 minutes.
- Dip ladyfingers quickly into the espresso mixture and layer them in a 9x13 inch dish. Spread half of the mascarpone mixture over the ladyfingers.
- Repeat with another layer of dipped ladyfingers and the remaining mascarpone mixture. Smooth the top layer evenly.
- Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
