For the Meat Sauce

  • 1 pound Italian sausage Any sausage variety can be used to suit your palate.
  • 1 jar Marinara sauce Homemade or store-bought works well.
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder Freshly minced garlic can also be used.
  • 1 teaspoon Onion powder Corn or shallot powder can be alternatives.
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning Dried oregano or thyme can be used if necessary.
  • to taste Salt and pepper Essential for seasoning.
For the Cheese Mixture
  • 15 ounces Ricotta cheese Cottage cheese can be blended until smooth as a substitute.
  • 1 large Egg Binds the ricotta mixture.
  • 2 cups Shredded mozzarella cheese Provolone or fontina can be mixed in for variety.
  • 1 cup Grated Parmesan cheese Use freshly grated for better taste.
For the Garnish
  • to taste Fresh basil Optional, brightens presentation and adds flavor.

Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large pot, bring salted water to a rapid boil. Add the lasagna noodles and cook according to package instructions, slightly undercooking them. Drain and lay them flat.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef and Italian sausage for 7 to 10 minutes. Drain excess fat, stir in garlic powder, onion powder, and Italian seasoning. Pour in marinara sauce and simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, and half of the grated Parmesan. Blend until smooth.
  5. In a 9x13 inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom. Layer three lasagna noodles, half the ricotta mixture, and a third of the mozzarella. Repeat the process.
  6. Add another layer of meat sauce, noodles, the remaining ricotta, and another third of mozzarella. Cover with the remaining meat sauce and top with the rest of the mozzarella.
  7. Sprinkle the remaining grated Parmesan cheese on top before baking.
  8. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes, then remove foil and bake for another 20 minutes until golden.
  9. Let the lasagna rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.
