Ingredients

For the Tuna Mixture
  • 10 oz Tuna drained; the main protein source for a heartwarming classic.
  • 1 medium Onion chopped; adds a delightful crunch and flavor.
  • 0.5 stalk Celery chopped; gives a fresh taste; bell pepper is a great substitute.
  • 1 clove Garlic minced; elevates flavor; garlic powder works too if you’re in a pinch.
  • 1 tablespoon Parsley chopped; adds freshness; dill can be a lovely alternative or simply omit.
For the Creamy Base
  • 3-4 tablespoons Mayonnaise binds everything together while adding creaminess; Greek yogurt is a lighter option.
  • 3 tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil divided; enriches the mix and is perfect for sautéing; can be omitted for a lighter dish.
  • 1/3 cup Mozzarella shredded; delivers that gooey, melty goodness; feel free to swap for cheddar or pepper jack.
For the Sandwich
  • Bread Sliced; any preferred type works, but sourdough adds a delightful twist.
  • Butter Softened; intensifies flavor and promotes browning; skip for a dairy-free version.
  • Salt and Pepper To taste; essential for seasoning.

Equipment

  • Non-stick skillet

Step-by-Step Instructions for Tuna Melt Recipe
  1. Begin by draining the two cans of tuna and transferring the contents to a mixing bowl. Next, chop the onion, celery, and parsley, and mince the garlic. Add all these ingredients to the bowl with the tuna. Mix well until evenly combined.
  2. Stir in 3-4 tablespoons of mayonnaise and 3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Mix in the 1/3 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese. Season your mixture with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Place a non-stick skillet over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Allow the oil to heat up for about one minute.
  4. Take a slice of bread and butter one side generously. Place the buttered side down into the skillet. Spoon about 2 tablespoons of the prepared tuna mixture onto the bread.
  5. Butter another slice of bread on one side. Once your first slice with the tuna mixture has heated for about 2-3 minutes and is golden brown, place the second slice, butter-side up, on top of the mixture.
  6. Cook the sandwich for an additional 2-3 minutes or until the bottom slice is golden brown. Carefully flip the sandwich using a spatula; cook the other side for another 2-3 minutes.
  7. Once both sides of your Tuna Melt are perfectly toasted, remove it from the skillet. Let it rest for a minute before slicing it in half.
