Preparation Steps
- Spread cubed bread evenly on a cookie sheet and let it dry out for about 1 hour at room temperature.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg until smooth.
- Grease a 9" x 13" baking dish and layer half of the dried bread cubes. If desired, add bacon or sausage at this layer.
- Pour the custard mixture evenly over the layered bread, ensuring all pieces are submerged.
- Cover tightly with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for several hours or overnight.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Optionally sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top and bake for 60 to 70 minutes.
- Once baked, let cool for a few minutes, slice into squares, and serve warm.
