Method
 

Preparation Steps
  1. Spread cubed bread evenly on a cookie sheet and let it dry out for about 1 hour at room temperature.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg until smooth.
  3. Grease a 9" x 13" baking dish and layer half of the dried bread cubes. If desired, add bacon or sausage at this layer.
  4. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the layered bread, ensuring all pieces are submerged.
  5. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for several hours or overnight.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Optionally sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top and bake for 60 to 70 minutes.
  7. Once baked, let cool for a few minutes, slice into squares, and serve warm.
