- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Melt the unsalted butter and mix in cocoa powder with water until combined.
- In a mixing bowl, combine buttermilk, eggs, baking soda, and vanilla extract. Whisk together.
- Gradually incorporate the cooled chocolate mixture into the buttermilk mixture while stirring.
- Add granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, and salt to the batter. Mix until just combined.
- Pour the batter into a greased 9” x 13” cake pan and bake for 30-35 minutes.
- Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 30 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
- For the frosting, melt the remaining unsalted butter and combine with buttermilk and cocoa powder. Gradually mix in powdered sugar until smooth.
- Once the cake is cooled, pour the frosting evenly over the top.
