Ingredients
For the Sauce:
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1/4 cup (60 ml) gluten-free soy sauce or tamari
- 2 tablespoons (30 ml) water
- 2 teaspoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (optional)
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste
For the Stir Fry:
- 1 tablespoon cooking oil
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
- 1/2 pound ground beef
- 1/2 small head cabbage, thinly sliced
- 2 carrots, cut into matchsticks
- 4 spring onions, sliced
Instructions
- Prepare the Sauce:
- In a small bowl, whisk together sesame oil, soy sauce, water, brown sugar, rice vinegar, sesame seeds (if using), and black pepper. Set aside.
- Heat the Skillet:
- Heat a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add cooking oil and let it heat until shimmering.
- Cook the Beef:
- Add minced garlic, ginger, and ground beef to the skillet. Break up the beef with a wooden spoon and cook for 5–7 minutes, until browned and cooked through.
- Add the Vegetables:
- Stir in the sliced cabbage and carrots. Cook for another 5 minutes, allowing the vegetables to soften while retaining some crunch.
- Incorporate the Sauce:
- Pour the prepared sauce into the skillet. Stir to coat the beef and vegetables evenly. Cook for an additional 3–4 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
- Finish with Spring Onions:
- Add sliced spring onions and stir to combine. Remove from heat.
- Serve:
- Serve immediately over steamed rice, noodles, or cauliflower rice for a low-carb option.
Notes
- Use Napa or green cabbage for best results.
- Adjust the sauce by adding chili flakes for spice or honey for extra sweetness.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
