Description

A true New York City staple, the Chopped Cheese Sandwich is a flavorful fusion of a cheeseburger and a Philly cheesesteak. Made with seasoned ground beef, melty American cheese, sautéed onions and peppers, and served on a toasted hoagie roll, this sandwich is an easy, satisfying meal that brings bold street food flavors to your kitchen.

Ingredients

For the Meat & Veggies:

  • 4 pre-formed hamburger patties (or 1 lb ground beef)
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh cracked black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 white onion, diced
  • 4 tablespoons butter

For the Assembly:

  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • 46 slices American cheese
  • Shredded iceberg lettuce
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Ketchup, mustard, or mayonnaise (optional)

Instructions

  1. Sauté the Veggies:
    • Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat.
    • Add diced onions and bell peppers, cooking until softened and slightly caramelized.
  2. Cook & Chop the Beef:
    • Place burger patties in the skillet, season with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.
    • Cook for 2 minutes, then use a spatula to chop the meat into small crumbles while cooking.
  3. Combine & Melt the Cheese:
    • Mix the chopped beef with the sautéed onions and peppers.
    • Arrange the mixture into the shape of a hoagie roll, then top with American cheese.
    • Let the cheese melt naturally over the meat.
  4. Assemble & Serve:
    • Toast hoagie rolls in a buttered skillet or under the broiler.
    • Pile the cheesy beef mixture onto the rolls.
    • Top with shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes, and your favorite condiments.
    • Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

  • Storage: Store leftover filling in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • Freezing Option: The cooked beef mixture can be frozen for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge and reheat before serving.
  • Customization: Add jalapeños for heat, swap American cheese for Provolone, or use ground turkey instead of beef.
  • Best Bread Options: Traditional hoagie rolls work best, but brioche buns or ciabatta can be used for a different texture.
