Ingredients
- 2 cups plain flour (all-purpose flour), plus 1/4 cup for dusting
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 3 1/2 tbsp (50g) unsalted butter
- 3/4 cup milk
Instructions
Step 1: Melt Butter in Milk
- Combine the butter and milk in a small saucepan or microwave-safe bowl.
- Heat until the butter is fully melted, then let it cool slightly while preparing the dry ingredients.
Step 2: Mix the Dough
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
- Gradually pour the warm milk and butter mixture into the flour, stirring with a wooden spoon or your hands.
- Mix until the dough comes together into a shaggy mass.
Step 3: Knead the Dough
- Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface.
- Knead for about 2 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and pliable.
- If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle a little more flour as needed.
Step 4: Rest the Dough
- Wrap the dough in cling film or cover it with a damp cloth.
- Let it rest at room temperature for 30 minutes. This step relaxes the gluten for easier rolling.
Step 5: Roll Out the Flatbreads
- Divide the dough into 6 equal pieces and roll each piece into a ball.
- On a floured surface, roll out each ball into a circle about 8 inches in diameter and 2–3 mm thick.
Step 6: Cook the Flatbreads
- Heat a non-stick pan over high heat (no oil needed).
- Place one flatbread in the pan and cook for 1–1.5 minutes until puffed and golden spots appear.
- Flip and cook the other side for 45 seconds to 1 minute.
- Repeat with the remaining dough pieces.
Step 7: Keep Warm and Soft
- Stack the cooked flatbreads on a plate and cover with a tea towel to retain softness.
- Optional: Brush the flatbreads with melted butter or olive oil for added flavor.
Notes
- Use warm milk for smoother dough and easier kneading.
- Avoid over-kneading to keep the bread soft.
- Always cook on high heat for the characteristic golden spots and puffiness.
- Wrap cooked flatbreads in a tea towel to keep them warm and soft.
