Ingredients
For the Savory Beef & Potato Layers:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 4–5 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
For the Creamy, Cheesy Finish:
- 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
- ½ cup beef broth or water
- ¼ cup milk (optional, for extra creaminess)
- Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Beef Layer:
- Preheat oven to 375°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and garlic, sautéing until fragrant.
- Add ground beef, breaking it up as it cooks, and season with salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, and paprika. Cook until browned, then drain excess fat.
- Spread the cooked beef mixture evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- Layer the Potatoes and Cheese:
- Arrange the thinly sliced potatoes in an even layer over the beef.
- Sprinkle with additional salt and pepper to taste.
- Pour beef broth (or water) around the edges of the dish to help the potatoes soften while baking.
- Top with shredded cheddar and Parmesan cheese.
- Bake the Casserole:
- Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is bubbly and golden.
- Serve & Enjoy:
- Let the casserole rest for a few minutes before serving.
- Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, add Worcestershire sauce or hot sauce to the beef mixture.
- Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes work best for their texture and ability to hold up during baking.
- Swap ground beef for ground turkey or sausage for a variation.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
- To freeze, wrap tightly and store for up to 3 months; thaw overnight before reheating.
