Ingredients
- 1 loaf (about 12 cups) challah or brioche bread, cubed
- 6 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup strawberries, sliced
- 1 cup blueberries
- Powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)
- Maple syrup (for serving, optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
- Assemble Bread and Berries: Spread cubed bread evenly in the dish. Top with sliced strawberries and blueberries, distributing them evenly.
- Mix Custard: In a large bowl, whisk eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until smooth.
- Soak the Bread: Pour the custard over the bread and berries. Gently press the bread down to ensure it absorbs the liquid.
- Rest: Cover the dish with foil and let it sit for 30 minutes.
- Bake: Remove the foil and bake for 30–35 minutes, or until the top is golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool and Garnish: Let the casserole cool slightly. Dust with powdered sugar, if desired.
- Serve: Slice and serve warm with maple syrup or your favorite toppings.
Notes
- For best results, use slightly stale bread or toast fresh bread lightly to dry it out.
- You can assemble the casserole the night before and bake it fresh in the morning.
- Mix up the berries with raspberries, blackberries, or your favorite fruits for variety.
