Description
A delicious Apple Upside-Down Cake featuring caramelized apples on a fluffy cake base.
Ingredients
- 3 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (about 4 cups)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup milk
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F.
- In a 9-inch round cake pan, melt the butter over low heat. Remove from heat and sprinkle the brown sugar and cinnamon evenly over the butter.
- Arrange the apple slices in a circular pattern on top of the sugar mixture.
- In a mixing bowl, cream together the granulated sugar and egg until light and fluffy. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk, starting and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
- Pour the batter over the arranged apples in the cake pan, spreading it evenly.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Carefully invert the cake onto a serving plate, so the apples are on top.
- Serve warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- For a caramel twist, drizzle some caramel sauce over the top before serving.
- You can substitute pears for apples for a different flavor profile.
