Description

A delicious Apple Upside-Down Cake featuring caramelized apples on a fluffy cake base.

Ingredients

  • 3 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (about 4 cups)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  2. In a 9-inch round cake pan, melt the butter over low heat. Remove from heat and sprinkle the brown sugar and cinnamon evenly over the butter.
  3. Arrange the apple slices in a circular pattern on top of the sugar mixture.
  4. In a mixing bowl, cream together the granulated sugar and egg until light and fluffy. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk, starting and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
  7. Pour the batter over the arranged apples in the cake pan, spreading it evenly.
  8. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Carefully invert the cake onto a serving plate, so the apples are on top.
  10. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • For a caramel twist, drizzle some caramel sauce over the top before serving.
  • You can substitute pears for apples for a different flavor profile.
