Description

Easy Ground Beef and Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes is the ultimate comfort food! A hearty dish featuring creamy mashed potatoes topped with rich, savory gravy and tender ground beef, this meal is perfect for busy weeknights or cozy weekend dinners. Simple ingredients, quick preparation, and satisfying flavors make this dish a family favorite.

Ingredients

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 45 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

For the Ground Beef and Gravy:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1¾ cups beef broth (divided)
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Mashed Potatoes:
    • Boil the Potatoes: Fill a medium pot with water and salt it generously. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then add the peeled and cubed potatoes. Cook for 7–8 minutes, or until fork-tender.
    • Heat the Butter and Milk: While the potatoes cook, heat the butter and milk in a small saucepan over medium heat (or microwave in 30-second bursts). Stir until the butter melts.
    • Mash and Season: Drain the boiled potatoes and return them to the pot. Mash to your desired consistency, then mix in the butter and milk. Season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Set aside.
  2. Cook the Ground Beef:
    • Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned and no longer pink. Drain any excess grease.
  3. Make the Gravy:
    • Combine Ingredients: Add 1½ cups beef broth, chopped onion, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper to the skillet with the beef. Stir to combine.
    • Simmer: Let the mixture simmer uncovered for 5–10 minutes, until the onion is tender and the flavors meld.
    • Thicken the Gravy: In a small bowl, whisk together the remaining ¼ cup beef broth and cornstarch until smooth. Slowly pour the mixture into the skillet, stirring constantly. Bring to a boil and cook for 2 minutes, until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.
  4. Serve:
    • Plate the mashed potatoes and spoon the ground beef and gravy mixture generously over the top. Garnish with chopped parsley or a dash of black pepper, if desired. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • Choose the Right Potatoes: Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes work best for creamy mashed potatoes.
  • Season Generously: Add more salt, garlic powder, or spices as needed to balance the flavors.
  • Use Lean Ground Beef: An 85% lean to 15% fat ratio provides the best texture and flavor.
  • Add Veggies: Feel free to stir in peas, carrots, or mushrooms to the gravy for extra nutrition and flavor.
